In this 129th episode I welcome Dr. Dave Berman back to the show to discuss vascular access devices. We talk about what kinds of lines exist, how to choose, what the pros and cons are, and how to know what kind of flow you will get with a given catheter.

Thank you for this discussion of the basics of vascular access which so often is neglected! One important fact to nowte is that an external jugular with a peripheral IV cannula inserted may be centrally cannulated. A sufficiently long IV cannula may terminate in the subclavian vein, and I think it’s important that it is treated as a CVC with appropriate sterility during insertion.
Good point Greg, thanks!
